iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service)
A hosted platform that provides pre-built connectors between SaaS applications, enabling workflow automation without custom integration code. Examples: Zapier, Make, n8n, Workato, Tray.io.
iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service) is a category of hosted platforms that provide pre-built connectors between SaaS applications, enabling workflow automation across multiple systems without writing custom integration code for each connection.
The category emerged with Zapier in 2011 and has since grown to include Make (formerly Integromat), n8n, Workato, Tray.io, Boomi, MuleSoft, Celigo, and dozens more.
iPaaS positioning by audience:
- SMB + prosumer: Zapier ($30+/mo), Make ($9+/mo)
- Mid-market + technical: n8n (self-hosted free or $20+/mo cloud)
- Enterprise: Workato ($12K+/yr), Tray.io ($600+/mo), MuleSoft (six-figure annual contracts)
- Pre-built connectors save weeks of integration work
- No-code interface accessible to non-engineers
- Faster than custom code for simple workflows
- Rule-based logic (no AI reasoning unless paired with separate agent layer)
- Visual builders become unreadable at scale (15-20 nodes is a ceiling)
- Per-operation pricing makes high-volume workflows expensive
- You don't own the workflow code — it lives in the iPaaS vendor's system
Example
A small B2B SaaS company uses Zapier to: send form submissions to HubSpot, sync new HubSpot deals to Slack, copy Stripe payments to QuickBooks, and forward calendar invites to a shared Notion database. Twelve Zaps, $80/mo, runs reliably. Once they hit ~500 ops/mo per Zap or need AI reasoning, they'll outgrow Zapier and move to either n8n (self-hosted, cheaper at scale) or custom (with a build partner).
